Living in Toledo

If you wish to live in Toledo, you certainly won't be the first foreigner overcome with such a desire. Although most foreigners tend to concentrate on the beaches of southern Spain, Toledo's unique charm has also served to attract such famous characters as Gwyneth Paltrow, who owns a home there. Although it is much easier for EU members as they have basically the same job and living rights as the Spanish themselves, it is still feasible.

The city itself is crowded from thousands of years building on the same mountain. It may be easier to do like the locals are and find a home in the growing suburbs on the Sagra Plain where there is still space.

Get your TEFL degree (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) before you go so that in case all else fails you will always have a method to earn money and feed yourself. Also be sure to visit in both seasons before deciding to buy, as what is pleasantly sunny in April may be gray and dismal in January, or hotter than Hades in July. The 15 minute commute of March may become the two-hour column of honking horns in August.

It is extremely valuable to know Spanish as Spain, unlike northern Europe, is not completely multilingaul. Fortunately, unlike other regions of Spain like Galicia, Catalonia, and Pais Vasco, the only language you will need to know is Spanish, or castellano as it is locally called. Natives are generally friendly and willing to help. However, as a foreigner living in a predominantly tourist city such as toledo, life and interaction with the locals will be much more convivial if you can improve to the point of near fluency.
